It seems to me that although he was Hindu, he had a far better understanding of Christ than I do myself, a professed and confessing Christian.

Toward the end of the movie, a young Hindu father tries to convince Ghandhi to stop his fast (which was initiated to bring the religions of India together and stop the violence that had been going on amongst the religions). The young father offers bread to Ghandhi and says that he knows he is going to hell but does not want Ghandhi's blood on his hands. Ghandhi asks the young father why he is going to hell. The father tells Ghandhi that he killed a Muslim boy by dashing the boy's brains out against a wall because a Muslim had killed his own young son. Ghandhi listens to the young father and then tells him that he, Ghandhi, knows the way out of hell. The young father, grief-striken and horrified at his own actions, asks Ghandhi how to get out of going to hell.

Ghandhi tells the young father to find a boy the size and age of the son that was killed and whose parents have been killed because of the violence and raise him as his own. Then Ghandhi says, "But make sure that the boy is Muslim...and that you raise him as one."

Jesus said, "Take up your cross and follow Me". How many of us can do that? Jesus said, "Go, and sin no more". How many of us even try? Take an orphaned child of your enemy and raise him in the knowledge of his people. We post 9/11 people shrink in horror at that thought and yet...isn't that what we're called to do? Aren't Christians to lead the way in tolerance, understanding and love because we have as a role model the Perfect picture of such tolerance, understanding, and love?

In the end, it was a Muslim man that shot and killed Ghandhi. Ghandhi's last words were, "God...God..." not pleading for his own life but pleading for peace in his land.

Evil walks the earth and draws to itself those who have lost their way; those who find their own agendas to be more important than anything else in the world; those whose lives are so empty and barren that they are easily picked up by the winds of damnation and carried to the gates of hell.

Pray for peace everywhere. Pray for the light of Christ to enter the hearts of all men everywhere. Pray that Christ's gospel of the Kingdom of God reaches every dark and lonely place harboring a withering soul.

Who knows about America?

I was watching the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel one day last week and watched a movie titled Life with Father, starring William Powell, Irene Dunne, and Edmund Gwinn (Santa in the movie Miracle on 34th Street). Life with Father is a lovely little movie about a turn of the century family (1800-1900, not 1900-2000, lol!)

What utterly amazed me, although I'm not certain why, was the movie's frank portrayal of an Episcopal family. At one point, early on in the movie, the Elizabeth Taylor (very young Elizabeth) character, in an apologetic manner, tells the eldest son of the family she is visiting that she is Methodist. The eldest son states that they are Episcopalian and his manner of speaking infers a sort of superiority based on that fact.

Living in today's world, you can imagine my jaw dropping when the Episcopal priest, played beautifully (of course) by Edmund Gwinn, kneels in church during a Sunday service and 'prays' the General Thanksgiving prayer from the Book of Common Prayer! He 'prayed' the entire General Thanksgiving! Word for word! In a movie! From Hollywood! Evidently the movie was well received by movie audiences as it was a faithful (pardon the unintentional pun) adaptation of a very successful Broadway play.

It is not for me to say anything about The Episcopal Church. My point is, rather, how did America get from there to here? We are so caught up in the here and now that we tend to forget that we were not always 'this America'. At one time, it was perfectly natural to portray a church service, to see people praying, to mention God and Jesus without those Names being used in vain.

America has come a very long way since the movie was made in 1947. The advances we've made in medicine, technology, travel, civil rights, and education is almost breath taking. Heartbreaking is what we seem to have left behind.

Who knows about the reason behind the boxes?

Very kind people are replying to my blogs but it baffles me-why would people respond in a font that I can't read? Hours later, again he went and hired more workers til finally the last people he hired only had to work one hour before the work day was finished.

I thought at work today that this parable meant that no matter when you came to the Lord, either early in life or late in life, the gifts to all who come to Him are the same.

But maybe not...maybe that's not what Jesus meant when He said those that are first will be last and those that are last will be first. Who knows? Does this mean that anyone who does not follow Jesus is dead and so other people who are not followers could bury the would-be follower's father and so then the dead would be burying the dead? It's quite obvious that to Jesus it was (is) far more important to follow His lead and be lead into everlasting life but is there another meaning behind this statement? Who knows?
October 7, 2009 4:38 PM

Would it matter if Jesus was ugly?

Bible scholars, theologians, priests, ministers, pastors-all will tell you the Bible holds no description of Jesus. I believe they are all incorrect and although I won't be able to prove this until I meet Him, I'd like to discuss with you the reasons I believe Jesus was ugly.

I think one problem of Jesus' physical appearance on earth stems from our great love for Him. We love pretty things, we admire handsome people-surely the Author of our salvation has to be a man of uncommon good looks. The other problem that I believe gets in the way of our actually 'seeing' Him through Scripture is the often practiced method of reading the Bible as literature. The Bible is not a work of fiction, is not a 'who-done-it', is not a magazine article tapping into today's latest buzz words and sensationalism. It is the inspired Word of God. If you believe all the 'good parts' of the Bible, then you have to believe the parts that make us uncomfortable, as well.

If you will look into the book of Isaiah, chapter 53, please read carefully what 'educated' people refer to as "the suffering servant theme". Theme. Rediculous. If we believe the verse that so many in pain and sickness lean on (Isa. 53:5-by his stripes we are healed) then we must also believe that this chapter is a revelation to Isaiah, from God, about our Lord Jesus Christ.

Something not stated but something that seems to sit well and make sense in my heart-God, knowing how 'wanting' in sensibility we are, would make His son of such a configuration, of such visage, that the only plausible way Jesus could draw disciples and worshippers is because of the Gospel He preached. He was so ugly that people didn't follow him just to be seen with him, as many people will do even today-they followed Him because the Gospel He preached was and is the true message from God. The Gospel of the Kingdom of God is what drew people to Jesus, it is my belief. The truth hit them so hard and so true as even we today know when someone is telling us stories and when what they are telling is real-it rings true in our hearts and our heads and we just know what we've heard is true. I believe that is true of Jesus in His ministry. His miracles, His prayer life, His command of all Scripture, His teachings which were 'not as scribes teach', and a face of unbearable homeliness.

Now...how do I even hope to support such an idea? Here's how:
Jesus spent 3 and a half years with the disciples. They ate together, slept together, walked together, laughed together, spent all of their waking hours with Jesus. They studied Him, they listened to Him, they were taught by Him, they ran errands for Him. The disciples knew the face and physique of Jesus probably almost as well as they knew their own. Here it comes...why is it come Resurrection Sunday, none of His followers recognized Him?

Matt 28:17-And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
Mark 16:12-Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them (believers) while they were walking in the country.
Luke 15:16-As they (believers) talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
John 20:14-At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

My belief is that Jesus returned from the dead in His Heavenly Body-not the earthly one, but His beautiful, eternal, beautiful beyond all human comprehension of beauty Heavenly Body and that's why the disciples and His followers couldn't recognize him.

If you spend three and a half years with someone, you don't suddenly forget what they look like in three days. I'm menopausal and my memory is better than that!

So, I will defend to the end my position that there does, indeed, exist a descriptioon of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Bible.

Who knows?

Who Knows about dying to one's self?

Is it possible to die to one's self? In the New Testament, Paul often speaks about being dead to himself and being a slave to Jesus. I'm certain there are living, breathing examples of people who are dead to self and wholly living to please to God and fulfill the example that Jesus set-surely Mother Teresa in her life was dead to self, however, having taken holy orders, one has to also believe that she was 'called' to the life she lived; free will not withstanding, Something Else was surely at play in her instance.

Is dying to one's self part of 'take up your cross and follow Me'?

Who knows?

God, Jesus, Holy Ghost and questions

This blog is about questions I (you, we, they, whomever, whatever!) have been afraid to ask for fear of looking, sounding, actually being, or being accused of being stupid.

I want to know. I need to know. I'm big on knowing. Knowing is cool and can be life saving. Not knowing can lead to casualties. So knowing is a good thing, not knowing is a bad thing, and we-you and I-are doing away with not knowing.

But you have to know. Because your granny told ya a long time ago...nope, ain't cuttin' it. Because Dr. Phil, as lovely a man as he may be, said last week-month, year, decade-no again, not a reference. Because the goat entrails told you .... um, this is definitely not the place for you. Back up your 'know'-ing. Article? Magazine? Personal study in such and such a book--NOW we're talking.

Just so you 'know'...I will be testing for gas. The "hot air" indicator will be employed.

Ok, kids, here's the first question:
What does it really mean to "Take up your cross and follow Me"?
